Sturgeon Point Lighthouse

Sturgeon Point Lighthouse became operational in the spring of 1870 and has been in continuous service for 128 years. It is still an operational lighthouse. Three miles north of Harrisville on Lake Shore Drive off US-23 is this light house that was built in 1869 and had a lightkeeper living in it until 1941.

The tower is 70 feet, nine inches tall and is 16 feet in diameter at the base. The light is a 3.5 order Fresnel lens made in Paris, France. The light apparatus is still maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard. The keeper’s house is a maritime museum which is open to the public seven days a week from Memorial Day until mid-September. The grounds are open all year.

Old Bailey School

One of the few remaining one-room schoolhouses still standing in Michigan, the Bailey School is a reminder of simpler times.

Built of Norway Pine in 1907, the school is still furnished with items of that period - a recitation bench, teacher and students’ desks, drinking pail and dipper, and a wood stove for heat. The school bell still sits atop the roof.

The school served the community until the 1940-41 school year. In 1973 the schoolhouse was partially restored at its location in Mikado Township. In 1998 it was disassembled and moved to Sturgeon Point where it was rebuilt and restored to near-original condition. The Annual Strawberry Social is held at Bailey School on the last Sunday of June.
